When it comes to your driving lessons it is very important to plan your training properly. It can be a very daunting process, especially with the vast amount of driving instructors and driving schools out there. Learning to drive is a very important life skill and you should be fully aware of the procedure and commitment it takes to learn to drive.

In the UK there are approximately 42,000 driving instructors. Driving instructors can be part of a franchise or a local school. For some more information on picking the right driving instructor or driving school, visit our blog post here. When it comes to your learning journey, it is important to consider the following:

  • How many driving lessons will you need?
  • What is the cost of driving lessons?
  • What driving instructor is suitable for you?
  • Which driving school should you go with?
  • How long will it take to pass your driving test?
  • What do you need to start your driving lessons?
  • Should you do an intensive driving course?
  • What are your reasons for wanting to learn to drive?
  • What car should you do your driving lessons in?
  • What driving instructor is best? A male driving instructor or a female driving instructor?
  • Should you do manual driving lessons or automatic driving lessons?
  • Will you be needing evening driving lessons? Or daytime driving lessons?

Driving Instructor

It is important to have a good driving instructor when it comes to your driving lessons. You can ask your friends for recommendations and you can check online reviews. If you learn to drive with a national school or a franchised driving instructor- don’t accept just any instructor that you are given. It is very important to make sure you are comfortable with the driving instructor whilst you have your driving lessons. Here is a quick check list to help you.

  • Is your driving instructor friendly?
  • Is your driving instructor’s car suitable?
  • Has your driving instructor got recommendations?
  • What is your driving instructor’s pass rate?
  • How long has your driving instructor been teaching?
  • Is your driving instructor able to full fill your driving lessons at a time and place to suit you?
  • Does your driving instructor work weekends/evenings?
  • Does your driving instructor provide deals on bulk lessons?

Driving School

Picking the correct driving school is a very important element when learning to drive. Many cities and towns across the country have lots and lots of driving schools. These driving schools usually have more than 2-3 driving instructors working under the driving school name. Although each driving instructor is still self-employed, they are what we call franchised driving instructors. This means they pay the owner of the school a weekly fee to be given work by them, i.e. pupils. As with the driving instructor tips it is important to consider the following advice:

  • Does the driving school charge more than an independent driving instructor?
  • What happens if your driving instructor is ill? Does the driving school give you another driving instructor?
  • What recommendations does the driving school have?
  • What offers does the driving school have?
  • Does your driving school give theory training?
  • What courses does your driving school offer?
  • Does your driving school do Pass Plus?

Intensive Driving Courses

When you start learning to drive it is important to consider how you want to learn. Are you in a rush to get your licence? Or do you have time on your side? It is very important to plan your training around your life commitments to maximise the best outcome. Not all driving instructors can offer intensive driving courses, as they have a full diary of learner drivers, and they simply don’t have the time or space. However many driving instructor’s and driving schools  do offer semi-intennsive courses as a compromise. This could mean you learn to drive over a few weeks as opposed to the traditional one week driving courses.

Companies that offer specialist intensive driving courses usually only offer intensive driving courses. These driving courses can be taken over 1-2 weeks and the learner driver has a dedicated driving instructor to full fill their training. Here are a few things to consider when looking to do an intensive driving course.

  • What happens to your intensive driving course if your driving instructor calls in sick? Or has an accident?
  • Is there another driving instructor incase you don’t get on with your given one?
  • How quickly will you pass your intensive driving course?
  • How are you assessed as to how many hours your will need to pass your driving test?
  • What ‘extras’ are given as par the driving course?
  • Will you have a practical driving test at the end of the intensive driving course?
  • Do you need your theory certificate to be able to start an intensive driving course?

Cheap Driving Lessons

Cheap driving lessons have been around for years. There are lots of deals out there and all learners should consider all of them before making any decisions. As there are a lot of driving instructors and driving schools- competition to win work is rife. There is a lot of rivalry between local driving schools. Cheap driving lessons don’t always give good value for money. Ie, the driving instructor (usually a franchised one) may consider saving on fuel, and not ‘drive around’ as much. It is important to consider what you get for your money when considering a deal involving cheap driving lessons. Here are a few tips.

  • What deal are you getting for your money?
  • Is there any time limit on your deal?
  • How does the instructor make any money?
  • Will you stay with your driving instructor after your cheap driving lessons has ended?
  • What is the lesson price after the deal has ended?
  • Will your driving instructor give you the same attention as a full paying pupil?
  • What is the reason for their deal? Is it to get bums on seats? Or because they genuinely are a good school?
  • Have any of your friends had cheap driving lessons and did they pass their test first or second time?
